WHY DO CHICKENS CROSS THE ROAD?
To attend the Fair Oaks Chicken Festival, of course!
And, last year, not only were they accompanied by several of their fowl feathered friends but also by an estimated 15,000 festival attendees all of whom were seen enjoying themselves at many of the family oriented festival activities being offered. To name a few:
But why would the Village of Fair Oaks have a Chicken Festival? Well, in its December 11, 2000, issue People Magazine wrote, "In most towns, chickens primarily appear prepackaged at the supermarket. Not so in Fair Oaks Village, Calif., where the feathered fowl turn up alive and clucking outside the dentist's office. And the hardware store. And the fire station".In the article, "Pecking Order", the magazine also points out that the chickens, on occasion, brazenly jump onto the plates of customers dining alfresco at one of Fair Oaks up-scale local restaurants.
Inflation, a fact of life, has not overlooked the Fair Oaks Chickens and today's flock is somewhat larger than that "about 150 chickens" People Magazine noted in 2000. And, since the chickens are still doing their thing (whatever that might be) in the Village, the Festival organizers decided it was time to put those birds to work. By lending their presence and fame, how many chickens do you know that get their own article in People Magazine, they are helping us raise funds to benefit a variety of local charitable and civic organizations.
